Tony Bellew has praised Anthony Joshua for the role he’s played in bringing boxing back to the forefront of the public interest.
The 27-year-old former Olympic winner has gone from strength to strength since turning professional in 2013, winning all 17 of his fights by knockout – and claiming the British and IBF world heavyweight titles in the process.
Everything the Watford-born Orthodox touches turns into gold, and his stock is only going to keep rising as he edges closer and closer to his peak ability levels.
And Bellew, the WBC cruiserweight champion, believes Joshua’s incredible rise to fame has been central to boxing becoming a sport watched by millions again.
Speaking to Drivetime, Bellew said: “Someone like Anthony Joshua, he’s a walking goldmine.
“Olympic gold medallist, he says all the right things – he’s got more sponsors than a billboard!
“Ultimately, on top of all that, he gets in the ring and, at times, looks like a young Mike Tyson again. He really, really does.
“So, it is people like Anthony Joshua helping our sport really flourish and remain at the top of the spectrum of the sporting world.”
Despite fans tuning into pay-per-view fights at an incredible rate, Bellew insists that more channels – primarily terrestrial – need to involve themselves in promoting and airing boxing if the sport is to continue on its upwards trajectory.
He added: “Ultimately we need it to keep on growing. We need more fighters to keep coming through, and, at some stage, we need all the TV stations to want to take part – not just one or two.”
